Chapter 02 : Developing grammar and vocabulary

Introduction

Strong grammar and a vast vocabulary are essential for expressing ideas clearly in both spoken and written communication. In this chapter, you will learn how to use advanced vocabulary and grammar needed to describe past, present, and future events within field-specific contexts, such as education, science, law, and health. You will also practise composing coherent texts using a range of connectors and linking words to enhance accuracy, clarity, and logical flow in your writing. Finally, you will evaluate the appropriateness of grammar and vocabulary used in different texts, with particular attention to context, audience, and purpose. The competencies developed will enable you to communicate with greater precision, variety and professionalism, ultimately strengthening your ability to engage critically and confidently in both academic and real-world discourse.

Good grammar and a rich vocabulary contribute to powerful and effective expression

Activity 2.1 Using advanced vocabulary and grammar to describe events

(a) Read the following passage and learn how the adverbs (later, first, faster) and the conjunction (although) are used. Then, rewrite the passage in your own words, changing the focus from the past to the present tense.

Last year, a group of researchers conducted a detailed experiment to investigate the effects of organic fertiliser on maize production. The trial was conducted across two large fields of equal size. One field was treated with a commonly used chemical fertiliser, while the other received compost made from household waste and animal manure. Throughout the growing season, the researchers monitored soil quality, water retention, and crop health. Surprisingly, the compost-treated crops not only grew faster but also developed stronger stems and produced larger maize cobs. In addition, these crops were less affected by pests, which reduced the need for harmful pesticides.

Although some farmers initially doubted the results, the evidence became clear when they observed the difference for themselves. Later, several farming groups adopted the compost method, arguing that it was cheaper, safer, and more environmentally friendly. This study demonstrated that traditional agricultural practices, when applied with scientific monitoring, can provide sustainable solutions for the future of farming.

(b) Identify advanced connectors in the following text. Then, use those connectors to compose a one-page text explaining what is currently happening in your own community regarding health and nutrition.

Doctors and health specialists are currently working hard to raise awareness about the importance of balanced diets and healthy lifestyles. Besides educating patients about the dangers of excessive processed food consumption, they also provide guidelines for regular physical exercise. In addition, hospitals have begun collaborating with schools to establish health clubs in which students learn about nutrition and fitness. Public campaigns on radio and television continue to spread the message that vegetables, fruits, and clean water are essential for good health. However, some individuals still ignore medical advice and continue to practise unhealthy habits such as skipping breakfast, drinking sugary beverages, and avoiding exercise. These habits increase their risk of developing preventable health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. At the same time, some communities have responded positively to the advice. For example, local markets now promote "healthy days", when fruits and vegetables are sold at reduced prices. In this way, the combined efforts of medical experts, schools, and community groups are gradually transforming people's attitudes towards health.

Did you know?

Advanced connectors help writers express complex relationships between ideas with clarity and precision. For instance, cause- and- effect connectors such as therefore, thus, consequently, inasmuch as, and since show why something happens. Inasmuch as is a formal way of saying because (e.g., Inasmuch as he was the most experienced, he was selected to lead the team). Similarly, comparison and contrast connectors such as however, nevertheless, on the other hand, and as much as allow writers to show differences or conflicting ideas. As much as can express contrast in opinions (e.g., As much as I admire her work, I disagree with her conclusion). Besides, addition connectors such as furthermore, moreover, in addition, and not only that help build on an idea and strengthen arguments. Finally, emphasis and illustration connectors such as indeed, in fact, especially, and for instance help draw attention to important points or provide examples. The use of advanced connectors improves the flow, formality, and persuasiveness of writing — especially in academic and professional settings.

(a) Identify the conjunctions and advanced vocabulary used in the following text. Write a two-paragraph text using conjunctions and advanced vocabulary to explain what would happen in your community if the law described in the text were enforced.

A new traffic law will be implemented next month, and therein lies the beginning of stricter road safety measures across the country. According to the regulations, all motorbike riders must wear helmets at all times, whether travelling in urban centres or rural areas. In addition, passengers will be required to wear helmets, and failure to do so will result in heavy fines. Drivers who use mobile phones while driving will face even harsher penalties, including possible suspension of their licences. Although some road users argue that the rules are inconvenient or costly to follow, the government has explained that the measures will significantly reduce accidents and save lives. Traffic officers will be deployed to enforce the law, while awareness campaigns will be conducted to educate the public about its importance. Furthermore, the government is working with insurance companies to lower costs for drivers who comply with safety regulations, thereby encouraging responsible behaviour. Although challenges are expected, the law represents an important step towards safer and more disciplined roads for all.

(b) Identify words or expressions showing time in the following text. In three paragraphs, write a text describing the characteristics of education in the past and present and how you think it will be in the future. Use at least three conjunctions and three adverbs.

In the past, students relied heavily on chalkboards, textbooks, and handwritten notes. Teachers were the primary source of knowledge, and classrooms were often filled with rows of wooden desks facing a single blackboard. Currently, education has changed in many schools. Digital projectors, online platforms, and interactive lessons are becoming more common, allowing students to learn more dynamically. In addition, group discussions and presentations have replaced the old “teacher-only” method, making students more active in their learning. However, challenges such as a lack of electricity and poor internet connectivity still affect some schools. In the future, learning is expected to become even more digital, with artificial intelligence designing personalised study plans for each student. Virtual classrooms may connect learners from different countries, enabling them to share ideas across borders. Nevertheless, teachers will continue to play a central role in guiding, motivating, and shaping students’ characters, since no technology can replace human care and encouragement. Although education systems will continue to change, the goal of helping students achieve their potential will remain the same across generations.

(c) Identify adverbs and conjunctions in the following text. In one paragraph, write a passage about the benefits of environmental conservation to the community. Use as many adverbs and conjunctions as possible.

Next year, the local council plans to launch an ambitious tree-planting campaign to restore the natural environment. Volunteers will work in groups to plant trees in areas affected by deforestation, especially near rivers and hillsides. School clubs will participate in awareness-raising activities, such as organising debates, writing poems, and preparing posters to encourage more people to join the initiative. In addition, companies will contribute funds to purchase seedlings, while environmental experts will monitor progress by assessing soil quality and rainfall patterns. Although the programme may face challenges such as water shortages or damage caused by grazing animals, it is expected to improve rainfall, reduce soil erosion, and increase biodiversity over time. Furthermore, it will train communities to care for young trees, ensuring the campaign does not end with planting alone. In the long term, this initiative will not only protect the environment but also improve the livelihoods of people who depend on farming and fishing.

Activity 2.2 Composing field-specific texts using advanced vocabulary and complex grammatical structures

(a) Write a short science report about farming, weather, or the environment. Use at least five complex grammatical structures and connectors, such as in addition, although, however, besides, or nonetheless.

Model text

The research team examined soil samples from three different villages. In addition, they measured water levels to determine how farming practices were affecting the environment. Although the results varied, the report concluded that areas with more trees had healthier soil and cleaner water.

(b) Compose a short case summary (real or imagined). Use at least two complex grammatical structures and at least two complex conjunctions or adverbs, such as therein, thereof, or however, to show the flow of your argument.

Use the following model text as a guide

The court ruled in favour of the farmer, stating that the land belonged to him by inheritance. Therein, the case set an important example for similar disputes. However, the defendant was allowed to appeal within 30 days.

(c) Write a brief business proposal about an idea for your school or community. Use at least three advanced connectors such as besides, in addition, although, or however.

Use the following model text as a guide

The company proposed a new system for selling books online. Besides making purchases easier, the system would allow schools to order textbooks in bulk. In addition, students could download digital copies at reduced prices.

(d) Write and present a campaign message on a health issue of your choice (e.g., malaria, physical exercise, or nutrition). Include at least three advanced connectors.

Use the following model text as a guide

Doctors have launched a campaign to reduce smoking among teenagers. In addition to visiting schools, they have organised radio talks to reach parents and guardians. However, some young people still argue that smoking is a personal choice.

(e) Write a one-page essay explaining how education is transforming in Tanzania or your community. Use at least five complex grammatical structures and five advanced connectors, such as however, in addition, and although.

Activity 2.3 Evaluating the appropriateness of grammar and vocabulary in field-specific speech and writing

(a) Compare the following two versions of the text. Which one is more appropriate for an official school newsletter? Which one would be more suitable for a student WhatsApp group? Rewrite the informal text in a formal style and discuss why adjusting tone and grammar matters for different audiences.

Text 1

The headteacher formally announced that the graduation ceremony for Form Six students would commence at 9:00 am sharp in the main hall. Parents and guests were kindly requested to be seated by 8:30 am to avoid disruption and allow the smooth running of the event. In addition, the candidates were reminded to wear proper school uniform, including blazers, and to arrive on time for the rehearsal scheduled for the previous day.

Text 2

Hey guys! Just letting you know that the Form Six graduation will kick off at 9 in the hall. Make sure you and your parents come early, like around 8:30 am, so you don’t miss anything. Also, don’t forget your uniforms and be there for the practice the day before!

(b) Identify the grammatical mistakes in the following text (including errors in verb forms, subject–verb agreement, and the use of infinitives) and correct them accordingly. Then, explain why inaccurate grammar in a medical setting could create dangerous misunderstandings for patients.

The patient have been advised to take his medicine two times every day. In addition, he must avoid eat too much sugar and oily food. Although he is feeling better, but after one week, the doctor recommend him to continue with the medicine for two more weeks. However, he don’t want to take the medicine because he think it is not necessary anymore. The nurse warn him that if he stop early, the sickness can coming back stronger than before.

(c) Study the highlighted vocabulary in the following text. Then, replace them with more formal, legal terms. Rewrite the lawyer’s statement to make it appropriate for a courtroom setting. After that, discuss why vocabulary choice matters more in legal contexts than in everyday conversation.

During the hearing, the accused said, “I didn’t steal nothing from nobody.” The judge, clearly annoyed, warned him to speak properly. Therein, the courtroom atmosphere grew tense. The lawyer stood up and said, “Your Honour, my client is, like, super innocent. Honestly, the police were just being unfair.” Some people in the gallery whispered and laughed at the lawyer’s words. The lawyer scratched his head and said, “Okay, so, like...here is the thing, your honour. This whole case is kinda...you know...all over the place. The officers just grabbed my guy for no good reason. They were just guessing”.

(d) Assess whether the connectors have been used appropriately in the following text. Identify grammatical errors and rewrite the passage using connectors that fit logically (however, therefore, consequently, although). Then, discuss how connectors can change the flow of meaning in a business text.

The company wanted to expand to three more towns. Besides, they did not have enough money to fund the expansion. However, they insisted on opening three new shops within the same year. In addition, they was struggling to pay the workers’ salaries on time. Their financial report showed that losses had increased for two consecutive years.

(e) Identify inappropriate vocabulary and incorrect grammar in the passage. Rewrite the text in a more formal style, suitable for a government environmental report. Discuss how inappropriate vocabulary can weaken important messages in official communication.

The government launched a programme to clean polluted rivers across the country. The project was, like, really cool because the rivers were super dirty and people could not use the water safely. Thereof, citizens promised to help, although many of them was lazy and did not care enough to participate. However, the Ministry of Environment argued that the project was a “game changer” that would restore water sources and protect wildlife habitats.
